Balloonfish

Diodon holocanthus

HIGH
Family
Diodontidae
Also known as
Spiny puffer, Long-spined porcupinefish, Freckled porcupinefish
Description
The balloonfish is a member of the porcupinefish family, covered in long, sharp spines that normally lie flat but erect when the fish inflates itself as a defense mechanism. It has large, striking eyes with a blue-green iris and golden-brown coloration with dark spots scattered across its body. It feeds primarily on hard-shelled invertebrates such as sea urchins, mollusks, and crustaceans, crushing them with its fused beak-like teeth.
Habitat
Found in tropical and subtropical seas worldwide, typically in coral reefs, seagrass beds, and rocky areas from 1 to 100 meters depth. Common throughout the Indo-Pacific, Atlantic, and Caribbean regions.
Conservation status
Least Concern
Notes
Excellent close-up macro shot showing the fish in lateral profile. The large eye is in sharp focus with the blue-green pupil and golden iris clearly visible. Spines are clearly visible lying flat along the body. The image is well-lit and high quality. The fish appears calm and resting near the substrate.
