Description
A large, robust crab with a smooth, dome-shaped carapace that is reddish-brown adorned with distinctive white spots and markings. It has massive, powerful chelipeds (claws) and red-tinted eyes. It is a nocturnal predator that feeds primarily on mollusks, using its strong claws to crush shells.
Habitat
Found on coral reefs and rocky substrates from shallow water down to about 50 meters. Distributed throughout the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and western Atlantic Ocean. Commonly hides in reef crevices and under ledges during the day.
