Blenny

MEDIUM
Family
Blenniidae
Also known as
combtooth blenny, scaleless blenny
Description
A small, cryptic fish peering out from a crevice in coralline algae-encrusted reef rock. Blennies are characterized by their large eyes, blunt heads, and habit of perching in holes and crevices. They are typically carnivorous or omnivorous, feeding on algae, small invertebrates, and detritus.
Habitat
Rocky reefs, coral reefs, and rubble zones from the intertidal to depths of ~30m; found in tropical and subtropical seas worldwide.
Notes
The fish is well-camouflaged within a reef crevice, showing only its head with a distinctive large circular eye and mottled brown coloration. Cannot determine species to level below family without seeing full body and cirri detail. Could be a combtooth blenny (Blenniidae) or possibly a small moray eel head — the rounded snout and large eye pattern is more consistent with a blenny.
